Our Wine Country Road Trip Itinerary

Foreign travel? Out. Airplanes? Maybe not. But what is a “I’ve been sheltering in place in a small apartment in San Francisco since March” person to do when they need a break from Fogust? It’s time to embrace the good old fashioned road trip!

Here in the Bay Area we are lucky to have so many close and open options we can use to escape to summer for a day, night or weekend. Here’s our idea of a perfect couple of days in Napa.

Escape the fog and head north across the Golden Bridge and head to Napa. Lunch at Gott’s in the Oxbow Market will hit the spot. The new Heirloom Tomato “A” BLT is a summertime must, as is a Strawberry Lemonade. Be sure to take the time to explore the market and to stroll around Downtown Napa. There are plenty of open-air, socially distanced options there.

Your home for the night: The River Terrace Inn. Check in, drop your bags and head out to explore either by bike ( sanitized rentals are available on-site) or for a stroll along the river. Take your time and be sure to soak in the sun. Next up, a short walk to dinner at the CIA at Copia’s outdoor restaurant, Grove. No, not the spy agency, but the Culinary Institute of America. The Grove, has a frequently changing set menu focused on seasonal ingredients (don’t miss their gardens!) and plenty of space for you to safely enjoy.

In the morning, sleep in and have breakfast by the river (it’s included at The River Terrace Inn!), or if you are eager for a walk, head to the Model Bakery for the best English muffins around–even Oprah thought so!

After breakfast, pack up as it is time for a day of wine tasting. Wineries are open for outdoor tastings and reservations are required. Return to some of your favorites or ask the hotel team for suggestions.

Time to head a bit further north to the Roman Spa and Hot Springs. After all, what’s a summer getaway without some pool time? Their mineral pools will help melt away some stress and tension leaving you energized to explore charming Calistoga, or perhaps just inspire a nap by the pool. Next up is dinner. Try one of the many culinary gems within walking distance or bring takeout back to enjoy poolside. Sleep well and enjoy breakfast in town and one last swim before winding your way back home.
